A Guru House

A Guru House

I used to make hand-crafted candles, and many times I left candlewax heating on my stove at home. Once after I left the house, I kept feeling there was a problem somewhere. After some time I returned home, only to find the whole kitchen was filled with black smoke and the plastic shades and curtains were on fire, with the fire rolling up the wall to the ceiling. All the wallpaper and glue was on fire, and it was on the verge of popping into the uncontrollable stage. As I looked up at the ceiling, I remembered that my follow disciple Chetana, who lived upstairs, had just had her entire apartment carpeted with blue carpet! I just stood in the middle of this mess and screamed out, "Guru, if you really love me, you will make this fire stop immediately—because Chetana will kill me if I wreck her apartment!" Sure enough, the fire just continued to roll up to the ceiling and rolled itself out! Then I started desperately trying to clean up the soot that was all over the place before my roommate came home. Someone had called the fire truck, so when the firemen came to the door, I yelled at them to help me move the appliances so I could clean behind them. From the doorway they surveyed the mess—they could tell it had been a serious fire—and they said, "You are really lucky this is a Guru house! But do we have to take our boots off to come in?"

Under God's Protection

It was evening and I was travelling by car with my father from Bratislava to Prague. From the very beginning my father asked me to sing Sri Chinmoy's songs, so I was singing. Finally he asked me what was Guru's most powerful song. I told him about the Invocation, Guru's most powerful song invoking the Presence of the Supreme. I told him that I could sing and he could imagine that inside his heart he was folding his hands.
When I finished singing the Invocation, it was all silent for at least 10 minutes, as we drove along the highway in the dark. Then suddenly our car went out of control. We spun around and crashed hard into the middle of the railing with the back of the car. We turned around again and stopped. During this accident I was saying aloud very fast, "Supreme, Supreme&quot. I opened my eyes and discovered that I was in my father's arms. He was looking at me with his eyes wide open, smiling, and asked, "What were you saying?" He felt that only because of Guru and the Invocation were we still alive. It was a miracle that nothing had happened to us. We were in Guru's hands.

You Are Perfect

"You Are Perfect"

My back hurt very badly and I was literally unable to move. Not wanting to waste any time, I went to a chiropractor. She told me that a disc had slipped and that it would take many weeks to correct this. Sri Chinmoy had been told that I was in pain and asked to see me. He told me to wait three more days before I went to the doctor again. At the end of the third night, I felt such determination to go to work the next day, although I could barely move. When I arrived at Annam Brahma, the restaurant where I work, everyone was astonished. "You shouldn't work until your back is better," they said. "I'm staying," I said. A few moments later Guru came into the restaurant, which was very unusual. He was told that I had come to work and he asked to see me. Guru sat concentrating very intensely with his head down. I stood as quietly as possible. When he looked up at me, I saw a circle form from Guru's lips, and a most enchanting birdcall came out! Guru smiled as he looked in my eyes and he said very sweetly, "You are standing! You are smiling! And you are crying! You can stand, and you can smile, and you can cry. Smile outwardly, and cry inwardly—what more do you need? You are perfect. You are perfect. You are absolutely perfect." These mantric words resonated again and again through my being. And it was true. My back was all better.

Walking Meditation

Walking Meditation

Shortly after I became a disciple of Sri Chinmoy, I once stayed with a disciple who had a cat in her basement apartment. The lady upstairs also had a cat, and one day the upstairs cat managed to get downstairs. Immediately the two cats went after each other, screaming and biting as if they were going to kill each other. When I tried to separate them, the upstairs cat dug her teeth into my right wrist. She was actually hanging by her teeth from my wrist, and when I got her off, she bit me a second time. Soon the wrist swelled up very big and I couldn’t use it at all. For the next two days, every time I passed by Guru for prasad or walking meditation, he had his eyes closed or was looking elsewhere. The wrist would not get better. On the third day, however, I saw Guru looking directly at the bandage on my wrist. Soon afterwards the swelling went down and the pain disappeared.

Very Peaceful And Calm

Very Peaceful And Calm

One Saturday morning, I went on a long run with another girl through a bushy, rural landscape in Australia. On our return, my lack of attention to the surroundings caused me to run into a sharp branch of a low-hanging tree. The end of the branch pierced my forehead, causing a deep cut. There was a lot of blood and it was quite painful. A kind person living nearby brought ice and agreed to drive me to the emergency room of the hospital. I requested my running partner to phone Prabuddha so that he could let Sri Chinmoy know. While waiting in the hospital, I started moaning with pain and became quite distressed. Finally I went into an examining cubicle, still moaning. The doctor took his time arriving. All of a sudden the pain left. I felt very peaceful and calm, as if Guru's compassionate presence was there with me in the hospital. I looked at my watch and later checked with Prabuddha at what time he had called New York. Of course it was at the exact same time as I had felt the recovery.

Vanished

Vanished

Before I came to New York for the first time for August Celebrations, I had never run more than 5 miles. But when I arrived, I heard that Sri Chinmoy was holding a series of races. Every day there were two races, and some were 7 miles long. After the first 7-mile race, my knee hurt so badly I could hardly walk, but I managed to take part in a "walking meditation". After the meditation, I realised that the terrible pain had completely vanished.

Two-cent Occult Power

"Two-cent Occult Power"

On one of our Christmas trips, Shubhra, Saraswati and I had a very frightening experience trying to make our journey from Western Samoa to Rarotonga. On this night flight, we were supposed to stop on some small island in the Pacific to refuel and then continue to Rarotonga. However, we had run into a terrible storm. After four or five attempts at landing, the plane did kind of crash land. Miraculously, we were all okay. Airplane rides, as you know, can bother your ears, and this time especially, one of my ears was affected. After a day or two in Rarotonga, I realised that I was not able to hear out of that ear. The next time Sri Chinmoy telephoned our room, I had to excuse myself because I was having difficulty hearing what he was saying to me. I told him that this ear was quite deaf and getting worse each day. Guru said he would concentrate on it. A few days later when I was serving Guru something in the dining room, I thanked him. I said "Guru, I can hear out of that ear now. It's not completely normal yet, but now I can hear." He smiled and said, "This kind of two-cent occult power I still have."
